I was never a Star Wars type of gal. In fact, until last month, I hadn’t ever seen the movies. Well, that’s actually a lie. I tried to watch Episode IV several years ago…and fell asleep. Since I was going to see the new movie and was one of the last people on the planet who hadn’t seen the original three movies, I decided to hop aboard the Star Wars train.
And I realized that Star Wars is A Course in Miracles set in space.
Now that’s something I can get behind!
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]Jedi strength comes from the force. -Yoda[/pullquote]
We think that strength comes from struggle, success or superhuman willpower. The truth is that strength comes from the surrender. Our connection to the universe is all of the strength that we’ll ever need. Plus all of our efforts to control and manipulate in the name of being strong end up back-firing. You know how it goes: you declare that you’re going to go to the gym EVERY. DAY. IN. 2016. and somehow you are going to will yourself there. And you go once or twice before you start to hear it. That voice that sounds eerily familiar. “Who do you think you are? You’re not a gym person. Everyone is looking out you. You’re tired, sleep in today. One day off isn’t going to do anything. It’s not like you’re going to keep it up anyway.” Yep. That voice. It’s the voice of your ego (fear) and as the metaphysical text, A Course in Miracles, highlights: “The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength.”
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]Many of the truths that we cling to depend on our point of view. -Obi-Wan Kenobi[/pullquote]
You are the image maker of your life. Did you ever play telephone at a slumber party? Life is like a game of telephone. Realities get twisted and distorted through our own lenses of perception. Lesson 15 from the Course says: “My thoughts are images that I have made.” There are no neutral thoughts because we are not neutral. Our lives are stories that we tell ourselves. And we can change the story anytime we want. Those truths that you think define you – that you’ll never feel healthy, you’ll always be single, you’re just not a happy person, you’ll always be in debt, you are not enough – as just like the end of a very long game of telephone. Your story is nothing like the original.
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]You will know (the good from the bad) when you are calm, at peace. – Yoda[/pullquote]
Your ego speaks first and loudest and thrives in chaos. Your head can easily be filled with crazytown thoughts when you are overwhelmed, overstimulated, tired, worried, or disconnected. Your intuition is always there and always talking to you but you can’t hear it thanks to the death metal band in your head (aka your sneaky little ego). In stillness you can receive. The Course says, “I will be still an instant and go home.” Inspiration. Truth. Guidance. Clarity. It all comes from a state of calm. You can hear the whispers of your inner guidance system when you get quiet. You can feel what your gut is trying to tell you when you stop moving. Commit to getting quiet – even just for one minute a day. No phone. No music. No people. Just you and your breath.
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”][Luke:] I can’t believe it. [Yoda:] That is why you fail.[/pullquote]
I totally get it, Luke. Seeing it makes it so much easier to believe it. And even then, it still seems too good to be true. But, as Wayne Dyer said, “You’ll see it when you believe it.” Our words and thoughts are powerful and when we are constantly thinking that something won’t or can’t happen, it probably won’t. The universe is always listening and lack of belief is basically a prayer for exactly what you don’t want to happen. You know the drill: you go out on a great, romantic comedy worthy, first date and then dissect it over brunch with your besties the next day and end it with, “But, he probably won’t call.” You’re saying that as a preemptive strike against your disappointment – so that if he doesn’t call you won’t feel so bad because you knew it. And you keep telling yourself not to get your hopes up because he’s not going to call. And then he doesn’t call. And all of your preparations haven’t actually prepared you are all. Next time, move through life like he’s going to call. Like you’re going to get that job. Like you’re going to pay off your student loans and have money saved in the bank. Believe it. Feel it. And you just might see it. Like the Course says, “I will receive whatever I request.”
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]You must unlearn what you have learned. -Yoda[/pullquote]
Somewhere along the way we learned that happiness is for the few, life isn’t fair, the struggle is real, and we are not good enough as we are. It time to call bullshit on these stories and unlearn them. The Course helps “us escape from the dream world by teaching us how to reverse our thinking and unlearn our mistake.” The mistake being our detour into fear. Our work is to remember that only love is real. Happiness is our birthright. We are enough. More than enough, actually. The struggle isn’t actually real.
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]Remember the Force will be with you always.[/pullquote]
The universe has your back. Always and forever. It doesn’t matter how hard to fight it. How much you ignore you. How far you detour from it. It is always there just waiting patiently for you. It is always there because it is you and you are it. It’s your safety net. Your strength. Your support system. Your guidance system. Your truth. The Course says that if you knew who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear would be impossible.
