Yep. Healthy chocolate is a thing. A very good, very delicious thing.

My coaching clients are usually surprised when I tell them that I have chocolate daily. In a game of word association, chocolate typically goes with bad, unhealthy, candy, sugar, or fat. But in my world chocolate is a must. And not has a “treat” [aka – one of my least favorite words or concepts] but as a regular part of my diet.

Did you know that chocolate has been used for centuries to treat things like fatigue, anemia, depression, memory loss, high blood pressure, poor eyesight, and more? Or that it helps release that feel-good neurotransmitter— serotonin—in the brain?

Chocolate begins life as raw cacao beans. Loaded with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and plant phenols, cacao is a powerful superfood and a prebiotic feeding the good gut bacteria. The more processed cacao becomes, however [commercially produced candy bars] the fewer healthy components remain.

So how do you find the healthy kind of chocolate?

  • Don’t be afraid of the dark. The darker the chocolate, the more beneficial cacao it contains.
  • Know your percentages: the number on dark chocolate packaging refers to the percentage of cacao bean in chocolate. For maximum health benefit, look for dark chocolate that has 70% to 85% cacao.
  • Go raw—or as unprocessed as possible.

My favorite chocolate is from a local company Pure7 Chocolate.

Their chocolate is paleo-inspired and made with only the purest organic ingredients. When I found Pure7 at my local Whole Foods, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. I’ve tried A LOT of raw chocolate and found very few that I liked. Something was always off about the texture – either they were grainy or fluffy instead of smooth and creamy. And I didn’t love the maple or coconut sugar flavor in the chocolate. But I was intrigued because Pure7 uses honey to sweeten their chocolate and there are few things that I love more than good quality honey. It was love at first bite! Pure7 is smooth and creamy while also having a little chewiness from the honey. They are subtlety sweet and seriously delicious. My favorite flavors are the coconut and cherry and salted almond [with pink salt!]. Something magical happens when you mix cacao and honey with cherries and coconut or almonds and salt.
